Back to Saturday 16th of November 1991 and FA Cup first round action against Carlisle United. In front of just 3106 supporters the Alex lined up –
Greygoose, Wilson, McKearney,Carr, Callaghan,Sorvel,Hignett, Naylor, Evans, Gardiner, Edwards
Substitutes Futcher and Payne.
Prior to the tie we were allocated a small number of tickets priced at £7 which were to be sold on a first come first served basis and the support was large as usual for the cup. The Alex dominated the first half and led through Craig Hignett’s 33rd minute goal but Carlisle fought back to equalise through Andy Watson’s second half header.
The large influx of away support had caused problems for the Carlisle catering staff as by half time they had run out of hot water!!
The replay was made an all ticket match and despite throwing away a 3-0 lead we eventually won 5-3 after extra time.
